Consumer Debt / Collections

Consumer Debt/Collections

Consumer Debt/Collections deals with consumer rights in the face of abusive debt collection practices. Consumer protection laws give people rights against their creditors; it protects people being sued by debt collectors. It seeks to either allow for fair debt collection or provide the consumers with alternative paths to contest the validation of debt information in cases where the information used by debt collectors is inaccurate.

JEP lawyers working on Consumer Debt/Collections provide services that may include:

  • Help with consumer disputes
  • Fighting debt collector harassment
  • Violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) (225 ILCS 425/1)-which prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect debt from a consumer.

  • Rob Harrer

The Law Office of Robert W. Harrer, P.C.

When a debt collector contacts you, you can contact Rob.  Rob sues debt collectors and defends people against debt collection lawsuits. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) regulates what debt collectors can and cannot do. Sometimes as little as a single letter or phone call from a debt collector can be a violation of the FDCPA.  Rob sues these violators at no cost to his clients. If he wins, the debt collector must pay Rob’s costs and fees. Rob is often able to settle cases and have the debt deleted, negative collection information removed from the credit report, and monetary damages awarded to his clients. Rob also defends people being sued by debt collectors. For defense cases, he charges a modest flat fee. When defending against collection lawsuits, Rob looks for FDCPA violations to turn the tables on the debt collector. Rob’s practice focuses solely on the FDCPA and collection defense.
